Creativity thrives in chaos. This is what they recently discovered.
If you are like me, you were raised to clean your room every day, to make your bed every morning, and to pick up anything on the floor and put it in its "proper place". Also, if you are like me, you are always questioning the routine and mundane, asking what has made it become so. When you think differently than the individual who goes along with the common ideals and beliefs of society, it can feel shameful. Is it not said that cleanliness is next to godliness? So what kind of person is one whose room fulfills its greatest chaotic potential before eventually coming to order? Such habits must be held by the devils! What exactly makes one a devil? Deviation, of course. What, then, of the individual who does not adhere to the nine to five culture, or opposes social stratification and a hierarchy system in the work place?
I have learned and am still learning to dismiss what society, and various social groups, preach to the individual. Society is made up of millions of individuals, and I am my own. My internal voice has deemed my life a failure time and time again because of my inability to conform, but I am learning that this is one of my greatest strengths. If we never question the patterns of society, our ancestors' traditions, our legal system, or our democracy how will there ever be change in our world? How will justice ever be served in situations of oppression, unjust social practices, or outlandish court rulings? Change is terrifying, but I cannot tell you how essential it is for us to get uncomfortable often. Likewise, loving ourselves does not always mean doing whatever we feel like doing. It sometimes means making ourselves very uncomfortable for the greater cause, just as truly loving another is not always convenient. Some people dread exercise so much that they do not engage in it at all. I am here to tell you that if you endure unpleasant burning and beastly sweat, your body and mind will thank you later.
Are you a chaotic mind with visions of reform and beauty? Me too. It means accepting our lives as they are, and not revisiting daily thoughts of what we "should be". I am constantly drawn to things that do not make sense in terms of rules and expectations. I like abstract paintings. Many will observe and see utter chaos. I see potential. I see freedom. I see beauty. Abstract art offers me the freedom to interpret as I desire and provides unlimited possibilities.
